Our partner organizations over in New Orleans (CommonSenseNOLA & SSDP Tulane) saw some real progress with their efforts today. Earlier this afternoon, the New Orleans City Council voted unanimously (7-0) in favor of decriminalizing marijuana throughout the city limits. The new ordinance stipulates a verbal warning for the first offense, a written warning for the second offense, and a $100 dollar fine for each subsequent offense after that. The expected to be signed by Mayor Mitch Landrieu in the near future and will go into effect 30 days later.
